MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
Last Updated: Dec. 25, 2005
It is with great regret that I announce that fanzine Crazed Imaginations,
at least in its current format, will be closing down. Effective
July 19, 2004, we are no longer accepting new subscriptions.
As you may know, Crazed has put out more than 100 issues: our final issue will be #106. Bill Brennan, our founding
Editor, ran Crazed for its first two and a half years, starting in 1995.
I've been with Crazed since 1998, serving as Editor with a 1-year-hiatus.
It's been a fantastic run, and I've loved the majority of it. I've
been so proud of the wonderful things the Crazed staff and the fan community
have done together. I've worked with wonderful people, some of whom I've
never met in person. I hate to spoil the party, but I want to end on a high note
instead of hanging on indefinitely until the magazine fades away (which, as it happens, we are doing anyway waiting for #106).
HOW WE'RE ENDING IT
As has always been our policy, all subscribers will have the unused
portion of their subscription refunded after our final issue.
Our final issue, #106, will be a big blowout--extra pages, maybe some
farewells, supersized, with a bunch of stuff from our files that wouldn't
fit in a regular issue.
The final issue will count as a
regular issue for subscribers, but may be considered a double for
nonsubscribers--we plan to use a lot of paper and a lot of ink. Gene
Chiovari, who has been with Crazed since about issue 6, is doing the final touches on layout by our regular fearless layout editor, Christine Gallipeau.
ISSUES IN THE PIPELINE
For old time's sake, Gene's computer has blown up and #106, while 90% laid out, is on hold until he gets another. We expect #106 to (finally!) appear sometime in the first quarter of 2006.
WHERE IS CRAZED GOING FROM HERE?
As a monthly paper periodical with subscribers and deadlines to get in
timely news...nowhere. That is the point of this announcement.
Single issues will be available on at least a limited basis. We will
attempt to make all issues available using print-on-demand.
We will be maintaining a web presence indefinitely. New content is a possibility, but not a certainty.
No, this does not mean Crazed is going virtual. If I had the time and energy to do that right, we'd be continuing the paper incarnation.
Some members of the staff are discussing the logistics of doing the
occasional special paper issue, perhaps on a quarterly or annual basis. Or
perhaps whenever we feel like it. Think "highlights" or "the year in
Rocky." Other possibilities include "from the vaults," historical, special
event or special interest issues. These will probably be print on demand
since it would be unfair to ask subscribers to wait until we feel like
putting an issue out. Details are still in flux.
APOLOGIES
I'm very sorry it's come to this. A paper fanzine is a dinosaur, and we've
been doing a lot of work for a very limited, for a very specialized
audience. That said, we've been a damn good dinosaur, and I'm proud we've
hung around this long.
Since I made the initial announcement, a couple of other people have said they'd like to start paper fanzines. We wish you the best and will do what we can to help.
Thank you.
